With recent cuts at the Indy Star and the shocking news that independent media staple Nuvo has published its last print edition, it’s easy to assume that the future of Journalism in Indianapolis is bleak. However, I’d like to think that maybe the ways in which we produce and consume media are simply shifting.
Rather than relying on the powers that be to tell us what news to pay attention to, maybe it’s time we tell our own stories about our communities. While traditional media that consistently produces quality content is needed in Indy, it is equally important to have media outlets that allow community members to bypass traditional “gatekeepers” that determine what stories should be told.
Indianapolis is full of talented storytellers launching blogs, podcasts, web series and more. As far as print-based journalism goes, there are a number of blogs and media outlets being made by and for the Indianapolis community.
